Silence around painful experiences. Intense pressure to succeed. Difficulty expressing affection. Fear of conflict. Emotional distance. Parentification. Self-sacrifice. Shame. Hypervigilance.

Having a history of these experiences in the family does not mean you’re doomed to repeat them.

There are real ways to overcome traumatic familial patterns, even ones that feel impossible to break. At Hayfield Healing, Dr. Maria Niitepold offers intergenerational trauma therapy, including EMDR, CRM, and Brainspotting, in Pensacola, Florida, and across New York, Florida, and 43+ participating PsyPact states. Break generational curses and create a different future for yourself.

Why Do Trauma Responses Keep Repeating Across Generations?

Families pass down much more than stories, traditions, and values. They also pass down ways of expressing emotions, reaching out for connection, and responding to danger, loss, or instability.

These responses may have helped one generation survive. A parent or grandparent who lived through war, poverty, immigration, racism, political violence, or profound loss may have developed survival strategies that were necessary at the time. But when the danger passes, future generations can inherit uncomfortable thoughts, emotions, and coping strategies that hinder them from living their fullest lives.

Intergenerational trauma therapy helps you identify those rules and decide what you want to carry forward. You don’t need to know the full family history or prove yourself to your family to move forward.

What Does Intergenerational Trauma Feel Like?

Those affected by generational trauma typically don’t realize it’s happening until much later in life. It doesn’t have to look like a dramatic family crisis either. It can simply feel like a painful familial or cultural pattern.

If you notice any of the following signs, you may be experiencing intergenerational trauma:

  • Feeling responsible for everyone’s emotional well-being or the family image

  • Believing that your needs create problems for other people

  • Becoming anxious when someone is disappointed in you

  • Struggling to set limits with family members

  • Feeling guilty when you succeed, leave, rest, or choose differently

  • Repeating patterns involving fear, avoidance, resentment, or shame

  • Feeling disconnected from your culture or uncertain where you belong

  • Feeling grief or anger for what you or previous generations endured

You may have been told that these patterns are simply part of your personality or culture. But a pattern can be understandable and still be painful.

Therapy does not require rejecting your family, blaming previous generations, or abandoning your cultural identity. It can help you hold the full story: the harm, the resilience, the love, the limitations, and the survival strategies that shaped everyone involved.

How Does EMDR, CRM & Brainspotting Help With Intergenerational Trauma?

Therapy begins by understanding how inherited family patterns affect your present-day life. In a typical trauma therapy session, you might explore the roles you learned in the family, beliefs you were taught, emotional or relational patterns you want to break, and how your body responds to certain triggers.

At Hayfield Healing, Dr. Niitepold uses trauma-focused and body-based approaches like EMDR, Brainspotting, and CRM to help address the emotional and nervous-system responses that may have started through past generations and remain active in the present.

EMDR

EMDR therapy can help the brain and body process specific emotions, memories, or beliefs that shape how you see yourself and your relationships inside and outside the family. You do not need to retell every detail for this therapy to work.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting can help access emotional and body-based material that may be difficult to explain in words. It may be helpful when you feel tension, fear, numbness, grief, or shame but cannot connect the reaction to one clear memory.

CRM

The Comprehensive Resource Model, or CRM, places significant emphasis on internal safety, attachment, and resourcing. This is especially helpful when trauma is connected to early attachment or developmental wounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Intergenerational Trauma Therapy

What is intergenerational trauma?

Intergenerational trauma refers to emotional, relational, and survival patterns that are passed from one generation to another. These patterns may develop after abuse, war, displacement, poverty, racism, addiction, family violence, loss, or other prolonged forms of stress.

Can trauma really be passed down through families?

Yes. Families can pass down deeply held beliefs, coping strategies, attachment patterns, emotional and relational rules, and responses to stress. Research also continues to examine the biological and epigenetic effects of severe stress across generations.

Do I need to know exactly what happened in the family to heal?

No. You can work with present-day symptoms, patterns, and responses even when you don’t have a full family history.

My parents did their best. Can I still have generational trauma?

It’s possible, yes. Your parents may have loved you deeply and done the best they could to support you. You can recognize all of that and still acknowledge that painful patterns were passed down. Both things can be true.

How long does it take to heal intergenerational trauma?

There is no universal timeline. The length of therapy depends on the patterns you want to address, the complexity of your history, your current support system, and how your nervous system responds to treatment. Some individuals may experience significant improvement in just a few sessions, while others may benefit from ongoing therapy to address deeper issues.
