You served. The version of yourself that came home is not the version that left.
That difference can take years to show up clearly. It can look like anger that wasn't there before. Hypervigilance you can't turn off. Relationships that feel harder than they should. Sleep that doesn't restore you. A persistent sense that something isn't right, even when nothing specific is wrong.
Or it can be quieter. A flatness. A distance from yourself and the people around you. A life that on paper is fine and on the inside doesn't feel like yours.
Trauma therapy at Hayfield Healing is led by a doctoral-level psychologist who is also a Marine veteran. That context shapes how this work is done.
At Hayfield Healing, Dr. Maria Niitepold offers trauma therapy for veterans, active military, and their adult family members in Gulf Breeze, Florida and virtually throughout New York and Florida. Services are available through VA Community Care in Florida, in-network insurance, or private pay.

What Brings Veterans to Therapy?
The experiences that bring veterans to therapy don't fit neatly into the categories most therapists were trained to recognize.
Combat trauma is part of it for some, but it's not always the dominant piece. Military sexual trauma. Moral injury. The cumulative weight of operational stress. Loss of identity after separation. The specific grief of losing service members. Adjustment after deployments that civilian providers often can't fully contextualize.
These experiences are real, and they often require specialized care from someone who understands the context without needing it explained.

Do I Need Trauma Therapy?
Many veterans don't recognize what they're carrying as trauma, especially when it shows up quietly rather than dramatically.
You might recognize yourself in some of the following:
-
Hypervigilance that was adaptive in service and is now interfering with everyday life
-
Anger or irritability that wasn't there before
-
Difficulty trusting others, including the people closest to you
-
Sleep disruption, nightmares, or chronic exhaustion
-
A persistent sense of being on edge or disconnected
-
Relationships that feel harder than they should
-
Survivor responses that don't fit the standard PTSD framework
-
Moral conflict or guilt about actions, decisions, or events during service
-
MST that was never adequately addressed
-
A feeling that something isn't right but you can't name what
Many of Dr. Niitepold's veteran clients come in having already tried therapy somewhere. With the VA. Through TRICARE. Maybe with a civilian provider who said they "work with veterans." Some found real benefit. Others walked away feeling unseen or stuck in approaches that didn't go deep enough.
Many of the patterns combat trauma, moral injury, and operational stress create are held in the nervous system. Real change occurs when your brain and body feel safe enough to respond differently. Dr. Niitepold guides veterans through this shift using somatic therapies and trauma-focused care designed for what military experience does to the nervous system.

How Does Military Trauma Affect Relationships?
For many veterans, relationships are where the cost of service becomes most visible.
When you spent years operating in environments that required hypervigilance, emotional control, and self-sufficiency, those adaptations don't simply switch off when you come home. They show up in your marriage, your parenting, your friendships, your sense of what you can let your guard down for.
Some of the most common experiences include:
-
Feeling emotionally distant from spouses, partners, or children
-
Difficulty trusting others or letting people get close
-
Anger or irritability that affects the people you care about most
-
Withdrawal from social connection or community
-
Feeling like civilians don't understand you and never will
-
Repeated relationship difficulties that feel hard to explain
Many veterans find themselves asking "Why is this so hard when nothing is technically wrong?" That question can keep you stuck for years unless your nervous system has a chance to process what it has been carrying.
This is one of the primary areas Dr. Niitepold helps veterans work through, drawing on both clinical expertise and her own background as a Marine veteran.
Trauma Therapy at Hayfield Healing
Dr. Maria Niitepold specializes in working with veterans who are ready to move beyond insight and experience meaningful, internal change. You do not need to retell your story for this change to occur, and instead can focus on letting your nervous system heal.

Her work integrates approaches that access deeper levels of processing than traditional talk therapy alone. She draws from:
-
Brainspotting, which helps access and process experiences stored in the body and nervous system
-
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which supports the brain in reprocessing past experiences so they feel less activating
-
Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM), designed for complex trauma and deeper nervous system work
These approaches allow for change to occur at a deeper level where these patterns are actually held in your body. The goal isn’t to “fix” you. It’s to help you reconnect with yourself in a way that allows you to move through your life with more clarity, confidence, and ease.

Work With Dr. Maria Niitepold
Licensed Psychologist in Florida & New York
I enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2010. An injury ended that chapter sooner than I expected. I went on to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology and now specialize in trauma therapy.
That history shapes how I work with veterans. I understand the culture. I understand what was lost in the leaving. I understand the specific weight of carrying experiences that civilians have no framework for. I bring that context into every session.
My approach is direct, evidence-based, and focused on real change. We don't meander. We identify what is driving the patterns and we work on it at the level where change is actually possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Childhood Emotional Neglect
Do I have to be VA-enrolled to work with you?
No. Veterans can access services through VA Community Care (in Florida), in-network insurance (Aetna or Florida Blue), or private pay. The free consultation helps determine which pathway makes sense for you.
What is VA Community Care and do I qualify?
VA Community Care allows eligible veterans enrolled in VA healthcare to receive treatment from approved community providers when care is not available through the VA in a timely or accessible way. Eligibility is determined by your VA care team. Authorization must be in place before services begin.
How do I get a VA Community Care referral to see you?
Talk to your VA primary care or mental health provider and request a Community Care referral for trauma therapy, EMDR, or Brainspotting. You can specifically request Dr. Maria Niitepold, NPI 1578292579. The Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (including locations in Pensacola, Eglin, and Panama City) submits the authorization.
Do you complete Compensation and Pension (C&P) evaluations or DBQs?
No. I do not conduct C&P evaluations, nexus letters, Disability Benefits Questionnaires, or any assessments related to disability ratings or service connection. My role is strictly as a treating clinician. If you are seeking documentation for benefits, the VA can guide you to the appropriate evaluation process.
I tried therapy at the VA and it didn't help. Will this be different?
Possibly. The modalities I use are body-based and work at a different level than most VA group or talk-based programs. Many veterans who plateaued in other approaches find that EMDR, Brainspotting, or CRM reach what those approaches couldn't.
Do I have to talk about everything that happened in service?
No. The approaches used at Hayfield Healing are designed to process trauma without requiring extensive verbal narration. You don't have to relive the worst moments out loud for this to work.
Do you work with military sexual trauma (MST)?
Yes. MST is an area Dr. Niitepold works with directly using trauma-focused, body-based approaches. The fit consultation can help determine whether her approach aligns with what you are looking for.
Do you work with moral injury?
Yes. Moral injury is distinct from PTSD and requires a different therapeutic approach. Dr. Niitepold has experience working with the specific weight of actions or witnessed events that conflict with personal values.
Can my spouse or adult child work with you?
Yes. Trauma therapy at Hayfield Healing is available to adult military spouses, partners, and adult children of service members. Services are provided to adults only.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes. Virtual therapy is available throughout Florida and New York and is equally effective for the modalities used at Hayfield Healing.
Is treatment confidential?
Yes. Therapy is confidential within standard legal and ethical limits. For clients accessing services through VA Community Care, communication with the VA is limited to what is required for authorization and continuity of care.
