Specialized Trauma & Somatic Therapy in Chappaqua, NY

Welcome to Holistic Healing...

Whether you're commuting into the city for a demanding corporate career, seeking refuge in Chappaqua's quieter pace while still carrying the weight of high expectations, or holding the quiet burden of childhood emotional neglect and narcissistic abuse beneath a life that looks balanced from the outside, you don't have to carry it all yourself. You can't out-work or out-think a dysregulated nervous system.

As a trauma therapist, I offer virtual trauma therapy designed for Chappaqua professionals and families — integrative, confidential, and built around your life. Using approaches like EMDR, Brainspotting, and the Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM), we'll work at the root of what's been stuck, without needing to endlessly retell your story.

No losing precious evening hours to another local appointment. No risking a run-in with a neighbor or school parent in a small-town waiting room. Just a direct, encrypted line to specialized support from the privacy of your home or office.

Beyond Chappaqua, I provide virtual somatic and trauma-informed therapy throughout Westchester and New York, including Bedford, Scarsdale, and White Plains. Not in Westchester? Here are more locations that I serve.

Is This You?

Dr. Maria Niitepold, trauma therapist in Gulf Breeze, Florida

This practice is for adults who carry more than their share: professionals, caregivers, veterans, and high-achievers who are tired of white-knuckling through life. I specialize in complex trauma, childhood trauma, PTSD, and recovery from narcissistic abuse. I also work with the patterns these experiences leave behind: low self-esteem, perfectionism, relationship struggles, and insomnia.

As an Estonian immigrant and a veteran, I bring a personal understanding of what it means to navigate life feeling like an outsider, and I offer both LGBTQ-affirming and culturally sensitive care. If you're functioning well on the outside but running on empty underneath, and you're ready to stop surviving and start feeling like yourself again, you're in the right place.

Signs Your Nervous System is Stuck in Survival Mode

You do not need to have a formal PTSD diagnosis to benefit from trauma therapy. If you are carrying the weight of unresolved stress, you might notice:

The Inability to Power Down:

You feel constantly "on edge," wired, or restless, unable to truly rest even when you are officially off the clock. (Clinical translation: Hyperarousal)

High-Functioning Exhaustion:

You perform perfectly at work, but crash the second you get home, leaving nothing for your personal life or relationships. (Clinical translation: Functional Freeze / Burnout)

Emotional
Detachment:

You feel numb, disconnected from your body, or find yourself going through the motions of life on autopilot. (Clinical translation: Dissociation)

Overreacting to Small Triggers:

You find yourself snapping at loved ones or feeling disproportionately furious or panicked over minor inconveniences. (Clinical translation: Dysregulation)

The Inner
Critic:

A relentless, exhausting internal voice that demands perfection and makes you feel like you are never doing enough. (Clinical translation: Toxic Shame / Complex Trauma)

Relentless Hyper-Independence:

You find it impossible to ask for help or delegate, driven by the exhausting, deeply ingrained belief that you must carry the entire load yourself to stay safe. (Clinical translation: Attachment Avoidance)

Recognize yourself in any of these?

What a Regulated Nervous System Feels Like

Therapy is not just about talking through the past; it is about fundamentally upgrading how your mind and body operate in the present. When we successfully process your trauma and regulate your nervous system, you can expect to experience:

Embodiment &
Self-Trust:

Instead of feeling "too sensitive" or embarrassed by sudden, disproportionate emotional reactions, you will feel safely rooted in your body. You will understand your nervous system's cues and trust your responses.

Quiet, Internal
Validation:

The exhausting inner critic, the heavy burden of toxic shame, and the chronic feeling of "never doing enough" will be replaced by a deep, unshakable belief in your own inherent worth.

Boundaries Without The Guilt:

You will develop the capacity to set firm limits and say "no" without spiraling into anxiety, protecting your energy so you can finally engage in deep, meaningful relationships.

The Ability to Truly
"Power Down":

You will be able to leave the intense demands of the day behind and actually be present with your loved ones, free from the exhausting background hum of chronic stress.

Unshakeable Focus
Under Pressure:

You will navigate high-stakes environments and relentless daily demands from a place of calm clarity, rather than reacting from a state of panic or survival mode.

Deep, Restorative
Sleep:

You will break the cycle of 3:00 AM wake-ups and racing thoughts, allowing your body to achieve the physiological rest required to sustain your high level of performance.

Therapies I Use to Help You Heal

Comprehensive Resource Model (CRM)

CRM was designed specifically for complex trauma and dissociation. It helps you process difficult material without having to relive it in detail. You stay grounded while we work at the root of what's been stuck. Many clients find that CRM reaches places other therapies couldn't. It's a gentle but powerful way to restore a sense of wholeness.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR helps your brain reprocess memories that still carry emotional charge, so they lose their grip on you. It's particularly effective for trauma, anxiety, and negative self-beliefs. Sessions involve gentle eye movements or tapping, and you don't have to tell me your whole story to heal from it. Many veterans and trauma survivors appreciate this about the approach.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting accesses what's stored deep in your brain and nervous system, especially the things that are hard to put into words. It's effective for trauma, chronic stress, emotional shutdown, and patterns of overwhelm. Like EMDR, healing happens without needing to verbally recount what you've been through. Many clients describe it as surprisingly gentle.

Clinical Hypnosis

Clinical hypnosis uses guided focus and deep relaxation to work with the part of your mind beneath everyday awareness. You stay fully conscious and in control. It's nothing like what you've seen on TV. It's especially helpful for anxiety, sleep issues, chronic pain, and patterns that feel automatic or beyond willpower. Most clients find the experience calming and more natural than they expected.

My Specialties

These are the areas where I do my deepest work

Recovery from
Narcissistic Abuse

Person breaking free from narcissistic abuse and emotional manipulation through trauma therapy in Gulf Breeze and Pensacola area

After a manipulative or narcissistic relationship, it's common to feel disoriented, self-doubting, and unsure of what's real. Gaslighting and cycles of idealization and withdrawal can fracture your sense of trust — in others and in yourself. Therapy is a space to process the confusion and grief, rebuild self-trust, and restore your sense of safety. This work is about reclaiming your own voice, values, and steadiness.

Trauma, Dissociation,
& PTSD

Woman experiencing trauma, dissociation, or PTSD symptoms, seeking somatic therapy and EMDR in Gulf Breeze and Pensacola, FL

Trauma often leaves patterns the mind can't simply think away — your body stays alert, emotions feel unpredictable, or connection feels hard. Whether it's a single event, military trauma, or prolonged stress, we'll focus on creating safety in the present and helping your nervous system register that the danger has passed. Using approaches like CRM, EMDR, and Brainspotting, we work gently toward stability and connection. This is often helpful for developmental trauma, relationship patterns, identity-related stress, and experiences common among LGBTQ individuals.

Perfectionism, Self-Doubt, & Low Self-Esteem

Woman struggling with perfectionism, inner critic, and low self-esteem in therapy session in Gulf Breeze and Pensacola, FL

Perfectionism often hides deep self-doubt and the belief that your worth depends on what you do rather than who you are. You might find yourself constantly pushing, overanalyzing, or deferring to others' opinions over your own. Together, we'll uncover the roots of these patterns — often shaped by early experiences of conditional approval or emotional neglect. Therapy supports you in building a more balanced sense of self and softening the inner critic.

Repeating Toxic
Relationship Cycles

Couple stuck in frustrating relationship patterns and emotional disconnection, ready for relational therapy in Pensacola or Gulf Breeze

It can be painful to notice yourself in the same dynamic again and again where your relationships start with connection, but end in distance, imbalance, or self-blame. These patterns often have roots in early attachment and nervous system conditioning, not weakness or lack of insight. In therapy, we'll identify the emotional templates shaping your relationships and develop new ways of connecting that feel mutual and secure. The goal is relationships where authenticity and safety can coexist.

Frequently Asked Questions

+

Does virtual therapy actually work for trauma?

Yes, and for many people, it works better than in-person. Modalities like EMDR and Brainspotting focus on your nervous system's internal state rather than where you're physically sitting. For Chappaqua clients, doing this work from home (in a quiet, familiar space after a long commute rather than adding another stop to your day) often allows the body to settle into a deeper state of safety than an unfamiliar office would. This can lead to more meaningful breakthroughs, especially when processing high-functioning anxiety or complex trauma.

+

Will anyone know I'm in therapy?

No, and that's intentional. Chappaqua is a tight-knit community where you see the same faces at the train station, school events, and local shops. Many of my Chappaqua clients are corporate professionals or parents in high-achieving households who value their privacy. My virtual practice eliminates the risk of running into someone you know at a local office. Instead, you have a direct, encrypted, and completely confidential line to a specialist who understands your world but sits outside your immediate social circle.

+

What if talk therapy hasn't worked for me before?

That's common, and it doesn't mean therapy can't help. Most high-achievers are experts at analyzing and explaining their way through problems, which is exactly why traditional talk therapy often falls short. Many of my Chappaqua clients are successful professionals who moved here looking for balance but still carry the stress, perfectionism, or relational patterns that followed them from the city. Somatic approaches like EMDR, Brainspotting, and CRM work differently. They address the physiological "stuckness" in your nervous system, the part that logic alone can't reach.

+

Do you take insurance?

I accept Aetna. For clients using other insurance or preferring not to use insurance, I also offer private-pay options. Many of my Chappaqua clients prefer private pay for the discretion and simplicity it provides: no diagnosis on file, no insurance company involved in your care, no records that could surface unexpectedly. I'm happy to discuss fees, insurance verification, or what to expect during a free consultation.

+

How do I know if I need trauma therapy?

You don't need a formal PTSD diagnosis. If you're carrying unresolved stress (from childhood, relationships, or a demanding career) and it's showing up as exhaustion, anxiety, emotional reactivity, or disconnection, trauma-informed therapy can help. Many of my Chappaqua clients don't use the word "trauma" to describe their experience. They just know they came here for a quieter life but the internal pressure didn't ease — the perfectionism, the people-pleasing, the feeling of never doing enough. The "Signs Your Nervous System is Stuck" section above may feel familiar.

+

What if my trauma happened a long time ago?

Childhood trauma doesn't expire. Even if it happened decades ago, your nervous system may still be responding as if the threat is present. That's why you might feel anxious, reactive, or exhausted without a clear "reason." Therapy for childhood trauma isn't about dwelling on the past. It's about helping your body finally register that you're safe now, so you can stop surviving and start living.
